They all sound great, especially 10538 Ouverture, but why didn't Jeff use real strings instead of a machine (he can afford them!). These are the days of real instruments, you know!
Yes I'm impressed too, Evil Woman has better chorus,,nice synth on Telephone Line & love dreamy verses on CGIOOMH.
I was lucky enough to have heard a sample CD of Long Wave on You Tube, before it got taken off quickly,,,'She' - the deep epic harmonies just blew me away,,,Smile, Bewitched Bothered & Bewildered & Love is a many Splendoured Thing,,all sound great & emotionally sung with the weepy guitar added, I'd say At Last & Mercy Mercy weren't the best tracks. Very pleased, well done Jeff :-)
Should have used 'real' string sections more consistently (are there any real strings on this?). Original versions had (a) the vocals "tucked" in nicely amidst the big sound and (b) broader use of multiple harmonies. Here, Jeff has brought the vocals front & center and in several cases has only provided a two-part harmony where multiples once were. Alas.
All I'll say is that there has been too many ELO compilations. I like the songs the way they were and where they fitted in their original albums. Hands up who prefers where livin' thing is on ANWR and how So Fine 'slides' into the intro...I would loved to have seen Jeff re-visit his songs in a different way - stripped back maybe and dressed accoustically.
If only Jeff had re-recorded Sweet Talkin' Woman or Wild West hero, in place of the poor version of Do Ya, then this would be a perfect album,I like all tracks I've heard except that one :)
I don't think he recorded these other than for reasons his music was regularly being used on soundtracks & all the royalties issues that went with it. But the bonus for us is they sound fresh & better in many ways. If they were done in a new stripped back way that would defeat the point of why he bothered in first place, but I agree it's a nice idea :)
Long Wave will sound great when we hear the WHOLE songs. Yes really, honestly, you wait & see :)
I'm sold! They sound fantastic. And as for the fake strings, that is what the ELO sound was, bombastic drums and new wave string sound. Here he is keeping it real, and his vox still sound incredible!

2You can listen to the samples of "Long Wave" on the Australian iTunes store.
Just go into iTunes and change to the store to the Australia one.
"She" and "Smile" sound excellent.
Sorry to say this, but just awful. That's my opinion as a diehard ELO fan going back to 1977.

Sorry, It's "here"...
Thanks for the link to the other Long Wave samples. "She" sounds amazing...
I was hoping he'd do acoustic versions of some old Idle Race songs.
:(
JEFF IS NOT GOD!
Nice remakes.
While I am firmly in the "wish it was all new material" camp, I'm very happy to see some of these revisited, especially 10538.
Let's hope that these two releases spark a regular schedule of releases from Jeff. He's been away too long.
