TOM PETTY IN HI-DEF

Tom Petty announced today that his catalog is now available on hi-def formats from select online retailers.  Included in that are the Jeff Lynne-produced Full Moon Fever, Into The Great Wide Open and Highway Companion.

The Hi-Res (24bit 96K) remastering of the Tom Petty catalog reveals a level of detail that was only previously heard by a select group of musicians, producers and engineers in the studio. It’s as close to the sound of original stereo master as you can get. We’re very happy with the way it came out, and believe it’s an important way to preserve the legacy of this great body of work. 

If hearing the highest possible sound quality is important to you, then this is where you’ll get it. 

The remastering was done in the fall of 2014 by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering. I supervised it and Tom approved it. Great care was taken to find the original first-generation masters and transfer them with minimal eq and little or no dynamic range compression. In cases where the first-generation masters were unusable, we used the best sounding second-generation masters.

To allow for full dynamic range, and to let the music “breathe” the Hi-Res versions have about 6-8db less digital level than a typical “loud” peak-limited CD or mp3. To enjoy these albums to their fullest extent, play them back though a good system and turn up the volume. 

With this increased level of detail and sonic impact, we hope you'll enjoy rediscovering these great albums as much as we did!

STAY WITH ME

It's one of the biggest songs of 2014 and now Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne are on the songwriting credits for it.  Sam Smith's Stay With Me may do well at the Grammys on February 8 - and thanks to an out-of-court settlement in October, Petty and Lynne will receive 12.5% each in royalties for it, due to the similarity to Tom Petty's I Won't Back Down.

From Tom Petty:

"About the Sam Smith thing. Let me say I have never had any hard feelings toward Sam. All my years of songwriting have shown me these things can happen. Most times you catch it before it gets out the studio door but in this case it got by. Sam’s people were very understanding of our predicament and we easily came to an agreement. The word lawsuit was never even said and was never my intention. And no more was to be said about it. How it got out to the press is beyond Sam or myself. Sam did the right thing and I have thought no more about this. A musical accident no more no less. In these times we live in this is hardly news. I wish Sam all the best for his ongoing career. Peace and love to all."

ALL THIS AND WORLD WAR II

Culture Factory USA is giving us another crack at owning the soundtrack to All This and World War II on CD.  Hip-O Select did a few years ago and the sets sold out quickly.  The new edition is part of Culture Factory's Vinyl Replica Collection and was released on January 20.  With A Little Help From My Friends/Nowhere Man by Jeff Lynne and Lovely Rita and Polythene Pam by Roy Wood are newly remastered for this set.

The short blurb:

This 1976 major studio film presents documentary WWII footage to the accompaniment of Beatles songs. The soundtrack album features many star singers such as Peter Gabriel, Rod Stewart, Bryan Ferry, Roy Wood, Jeff Lynne, Elton John, David Essex and Leo Sayer.

In one of the commercials promoting the upcoming Grammys ceremony on Sunday February 8, Jeff Lynne is listed as performing with Album of the Year nominee Ed Sheeran.  Stay tuned.

WILF GIBSON

Martin Kinch from Cherry Blossom Clinic has learned from the daughter of Wilf Gibson that Wilf passed away in October after a short illness.  Wilf played on 1973's ELO 2 and was even kind enough to sign copies of the UK remastered CD back in 2003.

OUT OF THE BLU-RAY

Eagle Rock Entertainment is now set to release ELO's 1978 Out Of The Blue Tour Live at Wembley on Blu-Ray.  Mixed signals on whether this will be Region 2 (for UK, Australia etc) or Region Free (for everyone.)

The set appears to merge both the Wembley '78/Discovery DVD with the ELO Live The Early Years DVD from 2010 into one Blu-Ray release.

UK release date: 16 March 2015
